Downtown Long Beach is one of the safest neighborhoods in the City of Long Beach. Much credit goes to the Long Beach Police Department,Fire Department,City services, and numerous community organizations dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all who visit, live, and work Downtown. The Downtown Long Beach Associates contributes to keeping the Downtown attractive and secure through two central programs that work in the 85-square block area of the Property-Based Improvement District.
Property Based Improvement District
A Safe Downtown, Every Step of the Way
The Downtown Safety Guides support the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD), property owners and tenants in overall crime prevention efforts and reduction in neighborhood street disorders. Highly trained and distinctly uniformed, Downtown Guides patrol the central business district on bike and on foot 12 – 18 hours a day helping to deter a multitude of quality of life issues and offering the Downtown workforce and visitors an enhanced sense of security.
Through welcoming residents, workers, and visitors to central business district, the Downtown Guides also serve as goodwill ambassadors. With the use of a hand-held personal data assistant (PDA), the Downtown Guide is able to provide walking and driving directions, answer questions and make recommendations for shopping, dining or attractions.
In July of 2014, the Downtown Safety Team added a full-time Homeless Outreach Specialist to build relationships with our homeless population and assist them in accessing local resources and social service agencies. With this service, DLBA is able to provide specialized attention to overcome barriers to assist our homeless neighbors, including street outreach, collaboration and data sharing with city and community partners. To connect with the Homeless Outreach Specialist please call (562) 972-8489.

There's an App for That
Downtown Guides are able to better serve the Downtown community by using a specialized iPod Touch app. With a swipe of a finger, Guides can provide information on restaurants and shops as well as log their daily activities. The app also allows the Guides to document disturbances, graffiti, and more.
DLBA staff can generate daily, weekly and monthly reports from these logs, which can be used to allocate resources within the district. These reports can then be sorted in a variety of ways and can then be communicated to local law enforcement, business owners and residential stakeholders, in order to keep them up-to-date on everything that happens in Downtown.
