The spirit of Live After 5, our monthly live music series bringing the best free entertaining around, continues as we invade the East Village—particularly MAKE Collectives and 6th & Detroit on September 8.

Performing from 5PM to 6PM at MAKE Collectives, located at 430 E 1st Street, will be duo Queen Califia. Led by singer Loryn Ruiz-Mendoza and guitarist Kelsey Landazuri, the team has shifted from being an acoustic duo and heading toward their jazz leanings and playing with full bands.

“When we first started playing, we were an acoustic duo and we predominately played folk music,” Ruiz-Mendoza told the Post. “As we got to know each other, our styles began to mesh between Kelsey’s folk background and my jazz background. We both share a love for artists such as Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, and early rockabilly, and this greatly influenced our style when we began making music together. Now, we much prefer to rock out with our full band.”

From 7PM to 8PM at 6th & Detroit, located at 105 Linden Avenue, will be boy-girl team Tigers in the Sky.

Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Lionel-Keone DeGuzman and vocalist Casey Liu, who met some five years ago, trekked to Long Beach via the islands of Hawaii to bring their music with them. Their introspective, playful and cheerful songs manage to capture the breezy, subtle beauty of their island surroundings with bright acoustic guitar rhythms, steel pedal infusions, piano flourishes, soaring violins, horns and gentle drum beats.

Live After 5: East Village Shops takes place on September 8.
