The Red Aunts, Long Beach’s famed all-female punk band (for lack a better description given the perfect eschewed any formal fitting into the 90s alt-rock scene), haven’t performed together since the band parted ways in 1998—and that is about to change as the band has been invited to perform at the 25th anniversary of well-loved punk label In the Red Records.

Four ladies—Terri Wahl, Kerry Davis, Debi Martini, Leslie Noelle—formed Red Aunts and quickly became the epitome on anti-arena punk with their unique brand of reckless rock. Jon Wahl of Claw Hammer (and once a husband to Terri) partnered with Scott Drank of Long Beach-based band Humped to help the Red Aunts form, leading them from indie label Sympathy for the Record Industry to massive punk label Epitaph. While Epitaph’s other signees were seeing widespread success in the 1990s obsession with rock—we’re talking Pennywise, Bad Religion, Social D, NOFX, Green Day, Motion City Soundtrack…—Red Aunts remained off the mainstream pulse despite bring critical darlings.

Their final album Ghetto Blasters, produced by the Gories’ Mick Collins (whose band will also join the In The Red anniversary party lineup), is considered their best work. Feedback-fueled guitars. One-chord wonders with catchy melodies. Hints of country and the blues.

When In The Red Records released their sole and inaugural Greatest Hits compilation, VICE’s Noisey streamed it to remind people they’re not just an “all-female punk band” but a legitimate musical punk force.

The In The Red anniversary celebration is set to take place over three days from July 14 through July 16, featuring Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin performing Reverse Shark Attack, The Gories, The Oblivians, GØGGS, Boss Hog, Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds, Cheater Slicks, Meatbodies, Wand, Sleeping Beauties, Lamps, Wounded Lion, CFM, The Double and more.
